Walking
There are plenty of wonderful walks around the area. You will find a book full of ideas of walks in the cabinet by the dining table. Try some of these:
Wharariki is a wild west coast beach with a huge expanse of sand and wonderful rocks with holes in them. Travel by car to Pakawau then after the smal bridge take the road to the right and follow the signs to Farewell Spit. At Puponga, take the road to the left - sign posted to Wharariki. There is a good car parking area, then take a walk over farmland to the beach - it will take about 20 minutes. Check the weather out before you go. If it is a strong westerly or northwesterly, it might be unpleasant. The wind whips up the sand and it can be quite hard work with the sand gets into your hair and eyes but on a lovely day, it is quite spectacular. Take your lunch and even your tea, plenty to drink - there are no shops, and watch the sun set - it is a special place in the right conditions.

Totaranui to Separation point. Take a scenic drive to Totaranui. There is a Department of Conservation building at the end of the road (with a shop) and there are good maps indicating various walks. The walk to Separation Point is easy with good paths and wonderful views to golden sand beaches which the paths will lead you to. On a good day, the view from Separation Point to the Golden Bay and Marlborough Sounds is fantastic and if you're lucky you might see some young sea lions.
Totaranui to Awaroa. Again DOC have good maps of this coastal route. It is fun to walk to Awaroa Lodge for lunch and get the water taxi back to Totaranui if you don't feel the need to walk off the delicious food, make sure you get the tides right or you might need to dry out when you get to Awaroa. If you walk through the bush in summer look out for the stunning rata trees in flower.
Wainu Inlet to Whariwharangi and walk to the haunted house. This will take a few hours so pack a lunch and enjoy the walk through regenerating native bush.
Wainui waterfall - take a walk over the swing bridge and walk up to the beautiful falls. Take the road to Totaranui and as you head inland from Wainui Bay, (the next bay to Tata Beach) you will see the sign to the right for the falls.
The Department of Conservation has a very good website that tells you all about other walks in the region. There are lots more besides the ones above.
We are just on the edge of the Abel Tasman National Park, well known for its stunning beaches and beautiful scenery over Tasman and Golden Bays. To walk the Abel Tasman you will need to allow for at least three days. it can be walked either from Totaranui or Marahau ends. Be aware that in the middle of summer this track is very busy. Alternatively you might like to kayak it with hires available from Pohara or Marahau.
